Wendy Stedman

Wendy studied Art at Rolle College, Devon specialising in printmaking, and at Goldsmiths College, London (Textiles as an Art Form). After a period of full time teaching, her career in the 1980’s developed to allow more time for her own art work.
Wendy is currently based close to Launceston in East Cornwall. Having spent many years working as a print maker, concentrating on applying colour to the surface, the move into textiles offered her the chance to see colour as an integral part on the structure.
Wendy finds inspiration for her stunning woven pieces in the many visually striking forms occurring naturally in the Cornish landscape. Her wall pieces have been produced by a technique based by on Ikat weavers of Central Asia, where the threads are dyed with the design before being woven. This allows for exciting colour shift and visual movement.
The process of pre-dying the threads is very slow and the need to control the yarn movement throughout this process has taken many years to perfect. Her work can be viewed in two ways; firstly at a distance when the overall image can be seen and then as a close up where the juxtaposition of colour can be minutely appreciated. Each piece is alive with colour and the three dimensional effects are pleasing to the eye.
